People say there is no love stronger than that between a mother and her child, and this could not be any more true for one mother who threw a gender reveal party for her 20-year-old transgender son.
After Heather Lundberg Green of Louisville, KY found out that her son Adrian Brown wanted to make the transition from female to male, the mother of two came up with one of the most heartwarming ways to celebrate her child's 20th birthday - a gender reveal party.
In a special guest post on the Love That Matters blog, Green explained that when she found out that her son wished to live his life as a male instead of female, she expressed her "unconditional love and support."
"Honestly, when he told me he was transitioning, I was determined to support him through his journey, but I had no idea how," Green wrote. "I have always had many friends in the LGBTQ community, and still, I wasn’t sure what steps I should take as his mother, or even what an appropriate response was outside of ‘I still love you.' How do I tell people, how do I say this is my son and I’m proud that he has the courage to live his truth, how do I set the tone in our corner of the universe for his journey to be as smooth as possible?"
Green wanted to wait until her son was comfortable in his transitioning process before she did something. During that time, she meditated on her wishes to help him during this time and wanted to find a way to celebrate his courage, strength, and resolve.
"After we had time to begin the transition and to become more comfortable with this new journey, I wanted to share this important moment with my friends," the mother wrote. "I hoped that it would move them to share it with their friends so that people could see that it is perfectly acceptable to surround a transition with joy and love instead of the typical ostracizing and dysphoria that occurs. I wanted to prove to Adrian that there is support for him beyond what he saw."
And she found the perfect way: a "Gender Reveal Party" photoshoot.
With the help of family and friends, Green orchestrated the photoshoot where her son was wrapped up in a swaddle reading "It's A Boy," as well as pictures of him with his mother and brother. Green then posted the images to her own Facebook page, where it has received more than 30,000 likes since she posted it in late January.
"When your child comes out as trans, the best thing to do is create a photoshoot to celebrate the fact that he silently and bravely stepped out of the race that he never wanted to be in, found his own lane and proceeded to win," Green wrote in the post. "HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY, Adrian! You are without a doubt the most fascinating human I know and I will always be your biggest fan! I love you, I honor who you are and I respect your courage to be unapologetically you!! Lets celebrate!"
For Green, the photoshoot and Facebook post was something much more than just a way for her to show off how much she loves her son. As a mother of a transgender son, Green hopes her gesture opens up a dialogue between parents and their transgender children. She hopes it becomes a way to celebrate the message of "joy and celebration."
"It is not enough to accept or ‘put up’ with the Transgender community, we need to celebrate them," Green wrote in her blogpost. "These men and women have had courage that is beyond anything we can fathom. The strength they possess to not only come out to themselves but to share their truth with a largely unaccepting world is profound! We should be able to celebrate our similarities and differences with all of the people of the world."
Let's hope that more parents pick up where Green left off and begin to love their children for who they are, no matter who they are.
